Problems And Potentials Of Indonesian Education
Education was aimed toward achieving specials goals. There were three systems of education. The first one was in conformity with the educational system in the Netherlands and provided education for the children of the Dutch colonizers. The second, a very meagre one, was western-oriented, and was open only to a minority of Indonesians, selected on the basis of noble birth or high status in colonial society. Its object was to provide the educated personnel needed by the Dutch administration and by Dutch business in a cheap way. It consisted of seven-year Elementary Schools, seven-year Secondary Schools, and 4 seven-year College training.
The third system was meant for the people. It consisted of a three-year Elementary School, established only in the largest villages, poorly satffed, and completely financed by the village people themselves, the majority of whom became illiterate again after a certain time. Its main object was to demonstrate to the outside world how to the outside world how progressive the Dutch regime was.
The educational picture at the end of the Dutch regime in 1942 is best illustrated by the following figures. The period of the Japanese occupation did not change the educational pattern as a whole.
