The Politics of Palestinian Nationalism
This book describes the development of nationalist sentiment among the Arab population of Palestine. Unlike most modern nationalists, the Palestinians have not been successful in forming an independent state, and their frustration has been a primary source of tension and conflict in the Middle East for several decades. After the Arab defeat by Israel in June 1967, the Palestinians became particularly active, forming numerous organizations to give expression to their renewed national feelings.
The authors’ major concern is the political dimension of Palestinian nationalism. They believe that many of the problem encountered by Palestinians have stemmed from such political difficulties as poor leadership, lack of integration, and outside interference. In trying to deal with these issues, Palestinian leaders have developed distinctive political strategies which have contributed to the fragmention of the Palestinian movement and left it vulnerableto its numerous enemies.
To clarify the sources both of strength and of weakness in the nationalist movement, the book begins with a description of Palestinian politics in the inter-war period. The bulk of the study deals with contemporary Palestinian nationalism and, in particular, with the most highly organized part of that phenomenon, the Resistance movement that came to the fore after 1967. A final section examines the inter-Arab dimensions of Palestinian political and military activities.
Unlike many studies of the Palestinians, this book does not deal with them primarily as refugees or as armed terrorists; nor does it analyze them only within the context of the Arab – Israeli dispute. It seeks instead to deal seriously and objectively with a relatively unknown issue-the political efforts of Palestinians, especially in recent years, to realize their national aspirations.
