The three documents reprinted here as a pamphlet deal with a defeat to the world socialist revolution-a major defeat that is still reverberating in world politics.The documents attempt to analyze the defeat and to draw some critical lessons form it.

It is quite fashionable among revolutionist to talk about the need for critism and self-critism in relation to setbacks to their cause. Unfortunately the breach between acknowledgment of the need and actually carrying it out is a wide one.

On the first document, Ernest Mandel written extensively on political and economic subjects of interest to the revolutionary socialist movement.The second document by the United Secretariat of the Fourth International.This is the leading body of the world party of socialist revlution founded by Leon Trotsky in 1938. The third document was written by a young member of the Indonesian Communist Party ho succeeded in making his way ito exile.
