The Science of Psychology: an Introduction

Here is a brief introduction to scientific psychology with concentrates upon human behavior. It is a book which will appeal to a wide range of phsychologists regardless of their theoretical positions. The author pays special attention to the definition of terms, the nature of psychological measurement, the function concept as an aid to understanding psychological prediction, and the experimental control of behavior in seven important areas.

Considerable emphasis is placed upon a resolution of the old dilemma of consciousness (experience) versus behavior. The major topics, as represented by the four sections on definitions, measurement, prediction, and control, are presented ina logical order which starts the student on elementary but fundamental issues and gradually progresses to more sophisticated aspects of psychology. Some 250 research reports, 58 line drawings, and numerous graphs are incorporated throughout to contribute to the student’s appreciation of the care required in the planning abd reporting of psychological investigations.

The book’s basic position is that studying scientific psychology should involve learning that psychological concepts are, to a considerable extent, defined by reference to operations and procedures. Other underlying tenets are that behavior can be quantified and interprented by means of functions, and that experimental knowledge should be distinguished from nonexperimental knowledge.

The Science of Psychology is a selective introduction, and no pretense is made about covering all of contemporary psychology. However, the topics covered are penetratingly analyzed.
