An Introduction to The Constitution of Malaysia
Malaysia as a political entity came into being on 16th September, 1963, formed by federating the then independent Federation of Malaya with Singapore, North Borneo (renamed Sabah) and Sarawak, the new federation being renamed Malaysia and remaining an independent country within the Commonwealth. On 9th August, 1965, Singapore separated to become a fully independent republic within the Commonwealth. So today Malaysia is a federation of 13 states, namely (in West Malaysia) the nine Malay States (Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis and Trengganu) and the former settlements of Malacca and Penang and (in East Malaysia) Sabah and Sarawak.
