East Timor After Integration
The struggle of the people of East Timor to free themselves from Portuguese domination to the final effort to declare themselves independent and integrated with Indonesia has travelled down a long road, through negotiations with Portugal, as the administering power of East Timor, amongst the existing parties in East Timor, and also with Indonesia. Efforts to settle the matter with Portugal came to naught inasmuch as Portugal had irresponsibly fled from Dili at exactly the moment which determined and abetted the onslaught of a "civil war" which took a great many lives. Indonesia's efforts, as the closest neighbour, to help settle the confusion in East Timor by proposing the formation of a "Joint Authority" and "Joint Indonesian-Portuguese Forces" failed due to Portugal's rejection of the idea.
