American Diplomacy 1900-1950
In July, 1947, and April, 1951, two articles appeared in Foreign Affairs, signed by a " Mr. X." Their subject was " The Sources of Soviet Conduct " and " America and the Russian Future," and they at once roused a storm of interest in America. In England, they were the subjects of articles and comment in The Times, the Manchester Guardian, and The Economist. "Mr. X" is now revealed as Mr. George Kennan, a distinguished former counsellor of the U.S. State Department. In this book he looks back at American diplomatic activity over the past fifty years. Mr. Kennan does not aim to give a full historical study of the period, but rather to isolate and clarify the fundamental pre-suppositions which have traditionally determined the thought of America's diplomats at home and abroad, and to show to what extent these pre-suppositions were related to the realities of international politics. He builds his argument round consideration of the Spanish War of 1898, the first formulation of the " Open Door" policy in China, America's role in the two World Wars, and her momentous peace-time decisions within the framework of the United Nations Organisa- tion.
