East Timor After Integration
Approximately eight years have passed since the East Timorese exercised their right to self-determination by choosing to be independent through integration with Indonesia. As free Indonesians, they distinctly feel the difference between life during the Portuguese colonial administration and that after it. If previously there was no measure of hope for improvement on their way of life, now the door of opportunity is wide open for those who strive and work for advance-ment. They are free to choose their own living and free to pursue their own happiness. It is true that there is still a long way to go in the development of the province. But then, in terms of history, eight years in the life of a nation is only an eyewink. Yet, already the East Timorese are sampling a better quality of life. The situation at present allows them to be actively involved in the process of shaping their community towards the realization of their aspirations. The last general elections held in May 1982, had put many sons of the new province into various responsible posts within the Indonesian constitutional system. In this edition, most of the factual data pertaining to the land and its people, the historical background and the development of events prior to the fall of the Portuguese administration, are the same as in the previous edition entitled 'Decolonization in East Timor', but in a revised and updated form. In addition, more space has been given to the claboration of activities in various sectors relating to the development programmes in the province.
