Emerging Indonesia
The success of the first edition of Emerging Indonesia has prompted Donald Wilhelm to return five years later to see what changes have taken place in the world's fifth most populous titled country. The result is a whole new chapter en- Facing the Future' and the inevitable revisions and updating - but the main structure of the book stands basically intact. Despite an increasingly high profile Indonesia still remains an enigma, especially in the West. It's a question of making the 'old - Indonesia's traditions and customs - compatible with the 'new her dramatic economic and social progress since independence. Professor Wilhelm traces her history in his initial chapters expanding with the passing of time to look very closely at critical political events in the last 40 years. His purpose is to show how Indonesia has initiated a dynamic pace of development to reconcile her past with her future. The Author explains the contemporary situation, of a complex nation, clearly and succinctly. Individual chapters cover matters such as national ideology, culture, foreign investment, industrial/agricultural de-velopment, transmigration, and the problems of youth and human rights. He finds that despite political perils and the world economic recession, Indonesia has continued to forge ahead. Donald Wilhelm's deep and wide-ranging knowledge of Indonesian affairs, and his access to leading statesmen, ambassadors and aca-demics, make him especially well qualified to present Indonesia to the Western reader. Emerging Indonesia is an invaluable, highly informed, yet very approachable study of a nation in progress.
