The Development of Political Theory and Government
This reading Plan deals with the problems of government and politics. It guides the reader through a discussion of these problems by some of the great writers of the past. The writings range all the way from the Book of Samuel to John Stuart Mill's work on liberty.
The Problems vary from the establishment of the Israelite monarchy 3,000 years ago to the establishment of liberal government in 19-th century England, from Plato's quest for an ideal commonwealth to the brilliant analyses by Hamilton and Madison of how freedom can be safeguarded in a stable, effective government.
Perhaps you pride yourself on your practical bent of mind. What help, you may ask, can such visionaries as Samuel, Plato, and Aristotle offer us moderns in our daily tasks of government? What do these ancients have to do with our problems or we with theirs?
I wish you good learning in the use of this plan. But I wish you more than that. I wish you the kind of learning that bears fruit in your actual life as a citizen-in your precinct, in your town and country and state, and in the family of nations.
