The Original Illustrated: Sherlock Holmes
Here-reproduced in complete facsimile-are the original SherloHolmes detective stories by Arthur Conan Doyle as they first appeared in the famed British magazine “The Strand”. This periodical was the sensation of the day, especially with the publication of the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles (reproduced completely in this volume) when eager readers lined up outside the magazine’s London offices, waiting for each instalment as it was published.
Illustrating the stories are the drawings by Sidney Paget-illustrations which are as immortal as the Sherlock Holmes stories themselves. It was Paget’s pictures which gave Holmes visual reality for all, which carried him through the world. Sidney Paget was, in fact, commissioned in error to undertake the illustrations; the editors of “The Strand” though they were commissioning his brother, who had illustrated “King Solomon’s Mines” and “Treasure Island.” Walter Paget was, however, to serve his brother’s model for the character of Sherlock Holmes.
In this volume are 37 shorts stories (published in individual volumes as “The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes”, “ The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes” and “The Return of Sherlock Holmes”) plus the complete novel “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”
The collection of the original issues of “The Strand” containing the Sherlock Holmes stories is a rare collectors piece, worth a substantial sum. Now it is presented in this volume, complete and unabridged and bringing to you the contemporary excitement of the enthralling adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
